
Spiders Split a Pair of Matches in the Carolinas

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The University of Richmond Men's Tennis team split a pair of matches in the Carolinas, as the team picked up a huge 4-3 win over UNC Asheville on Friday in Asheville, N.C., and dropped a hard-fought battle, 5-1, against Furman Saturday afternoon in Greenville, S.C. Following the matches, the Spiders improved to 9-5 on the year.
Against UNC Asheville, Mark Taranov/Alaister Burke picked up the lone doubles win as the duo defeated Wickwiree/Nicholson 7(3)-6(0) on court three while the Bulldogs took the matches on courts one and two to take the doubles point.
In singles, Kliebhan took his match on court one, 6-3, 6-4, while Davis Wiley won on court three, 6-4, 6-4. John Walsh defeated Bruno Serra (AVL), 6-3, 6-4, and Sebastian Miano picked up the last singles point 7(3)-6(0), 6-2 to give the Spiders the match win.
Against Furman, Karpinski/Kliebhan narrowly fell on court one in doubles play, 5-7, while Walsh/Wernink left their match unfinished tied 6-6 on court two. Furman got the court three victory to take the doubles match point.
In singles play for Richmond, Miano handled business on court five, 6-0, 6-1, while Wernink left his match unfinished at 6-2, 3-6.
The Spiders will be back in action on Mar. 23 at Longwood before traveling to Fairfax, Va. on Mar. 31 for a match against George Mason to continue Atlantic 10 play.
