Antonick’s Game Winner Snaps Five-Game Skid Against St. Bonaventure
10/01/2023 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – Behind a pair of late second-half goals from graduate Molly Wierman and senior Hannah Antonick, the University of Richmond Women's Soccer team notched its first Atlantic 10 Conference victory, 2-1, and snapped a five-game skid against St. Bonaventure Sunday afternoon at home. With the win, the Spiders improved to 3-7-3 overall and 1-4 in the A-10 while the Bonnies fell to 3-4-5 and 2-2-1 in conference play.
GOALS
'31 – SBU: Olivia Allen (penalty kick)
'62 – UR: Molly Wierman (free kick)
'67 – UR: Hannah Antonick (assisted by Gwen Howell)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Bonnies dominated possession in the opening minutes, a foul inside Richmond's 18-yard box allowed SBU to go up 1-0 in the 31st minute from a PK. Emma Shields recorded a shot in the 41st minute, but the Spiders would end the half down a goal.
In the second half, Sofia Mancino had a look in the 51st minute, but would sail over the crossbar. After the Bonnies committed a foul in the 62nd minute, Wierman lined up a free kick outside the 18 and slotted it past the Bonnie keeper. Five minutes later, Hannah Antonick would clinch the game-winning goal after a scramble inside the Bonnie penalty area from a cross sent in by Gwen Howell. Caitlin Sutton would put up two more looks on goal as time expired, but the Spider defense would hold steady for the 2-1 win.
NOTES ON THE GAME
FROM HEAD COACH Adam Denton
"It feels really good to get a win at home, we've been working really hard, and it's been unfortunate dropping the past few games. We didn't play particularly well in the first half, and we found ourselves down 1-0. We wanted to move the ball together more in the second half, and I felt that we played a lot better. We pushed forward and got the two goals and a well-earned victory."
UP NEXT
The Spiders have a tough schedule ahead, as the team takes on defending A-10 Champion Saint Louis on the road on Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. ET before traveling to Loyola Chicago on Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. ET. Richmond will return to President's Field at River Road on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. against Davidson.
