
Spiders Singles Comeback Falls Short Against JMU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost the doubles point and fell short against James Madison, 5-2, Saturday at the Salisbury Country Club.
The Spiders lost the doubles point after dropping the first two doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) lost 6-1 against Pierre Kohler and Alvaro Arce.
James Madison clinched the doubles point at No. 2 doubles after Tate Steinour and Paul Mendoza won 6-1 against freshman Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.).
In the final doubles match, junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) were tied 3-3 against William Karpinski and Gonzalo Adis at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Arce gave the Dukes a 2-0 lead after a straight-sets win against Evans, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Fernandez cut the lead to 2-1 after a solid 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Kohler.
James Madison took a 3-1 lead after Mendoza defeated Walsh, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Lovitt made it 3-2 after a 6-3, 6-2 win against Damon Roberts at No. 4 singles.
JMU clinched the win with a tough third set win from Steinour against Erwin, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
In the final match, sophomore Joe Nardini (Arlington, Va.) forced a third set after winning the second set 6-4 but lost the super tiebreaker 10-6 at No. 5 singles.
Richmond will remain home to face Furman on Friday, April 12, at 3 p.m. on ESPN+ at Westhampton Tennis Courts.
