Richmond Advances To A-10 Semifinal With 4-1 Win Against Fordham

ORLANDO, FL – The University of Richmond men's tennis team won a close doubles point and held on in singles to defeat seventh-seeded Fordham, 4-1, Friday afternoon in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals at the USTA Indoor facility.

The Spiders won the doubles point after winning two of three doubles matches. Junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) fell to Max Green and Finn Kemper 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) earned a 6-3 win against Fabian Mauritzson and Allen Thomas at No. 1 doubles.

Richmond clinched the doubles point after freshman Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) edged Lutwin de Macar and Alex Makatsaria 7-5 at No. 3 doubles. Erwin and Evans earned a break to go up 6-5. Erwin served for the doubles point and gave the Spiders an early 1-0 lead.

In singles, Erwin won two close sets against Makatsaria 6-4, 6-4 to give Richmond a 2-0 lead at No. 5 singles. At No. 1 singles, Mauritzson won in straight sets against Fernandez 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Sophomore Joe Nardini (Arlington, Va.) won a battle against Jofre Segarra, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. With the Spiders leading 3-1, Walsh won three-straight games at 3-3 to clinch the match against Kemper, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

Evans went unfinished at No. 2 singles trailing 6-7 (5), 5-6 and Lovitt had forced a third set against de Macar, 3-6, 7-5, 1-1 at No. 4 singles.

Richmond (17-5) will face the winner of Davidson and La Salle in the Atlantic 10 semifinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the USTA National Campus.
