2024 marked Jacob Huesman’s second season on Russ Huesman’s staff as quarterbacks coach, bringing a wealth of playing and coaching knowledge to the Spiders. Huesman joined the Richmond staff in 2023 as quarterbacks coach before adding Pass Game Coordinator to his title in 2024 and Co-Offensive Coordinator in January 2025.
In 2024, Huesman guided quarterback Camden Coleman to Third Team All-CAA honors. Coleman completed 160-of-248 pass attempts for 2,031 yards and 13 touchdowns, while also rushing for 342 yards on 76 attempts and scoring six touchdowns. Between 2023 and 2024, Coleman went 13-1 as a starter under Huesman’s leadership. In Richmond's win at Bryant on October 10, Coleman completed 15-of-16 passes for four touchdowns and added a fifth touchdown on the ground. His 93.8% completion rate from that game was the second-best in the FCS in 2024 for passers with five or more attempts, and his 322.2 pass efficiency rating set a single-game high in the FCS. He was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week following the performance.
Under Huesman’s guidance, Richmond finished second in the CAA in rushing yards with 2,527 and fourth in the CAA in total offense with 4,945 yards. The team averaged 27.15 points per game and 380.4 yards per game. With Huesman’s help, the 2024 Spiders went 10-3, reached the FCS Playoffs for a third consecutive year, and won back-to-back conference championships for just the second time in program history. The Spiders finished the regular season with 10 wins, their best regular-season record since 2009. Huesman also helped Richmond complete an undefeated 8-0 conference season, marking just the second such accomplishment in program history. The 2024 team became only the seventh in CAA history to finish conference play unbeaten.
In his first season on staff in 2023, Huesman saw four quarterbacks make their first-ever career starts: Kyle Wickersham, Camden Coleman, Jackson Hardy, and Ashten Snelsire. Huesman helped Wickersham lead the nation in completion percentage and finish 23rd in pass efficiency, while the Spiders as a whole ranked ninth nationally in completion percentage, 24th in pass efficiency, 11th in passing touchdowns, 23rd in first downs, and ninth in fourth-down conversions. Under Huesman, Wickersham threw 188 passes, completing 100 for 1,396 yards and ran for 401 yards and four rushing touchdowns. In his first career start, true freshman Camden Coleman led the Spiders to a 42-31 victory over Maine with six touchdown passes, tying for the most in a single game in program history and the most in the CAA in 2023.
Prior to Richmond, Huesman served as the tight ends coach at his alma mater, Chattanooga, from 2019 to 2023, where he led KeShawn Toney to Freshman All-America honors in 2021. During his first year on staff at Chattanooga, he helped transition Chris James from quarterback to tight end, leading to an All-Southern Conference First Team selection and preseason 2020 All-America accolades. James’ seven receiving touchdowns in 2019 led the Mocs and set a school record for tight ends.
With his father as head coach, Huesman played for the Mocs from 2011 to 2015, where he was a three-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Year and holds nearly every offensive program record. An All-America selection in 2015, he led the Mocs to the FCS Playoffs Second Round in 2015 and the Quarterfinals a year earlier. He became just the fourth FCS student-athlete to record 40 rushing (43) and passing (64) touchdowns in a career and only the second to rush for over 4,000 yards (4,051) and pass for over 8,000 yards (8,197) in a career.
Huesman began his coaching career at Richmond as an offensive assistant in 2017 before taking a graduate assistant position at Georgia State in 2018.
