AIKEN, S.C. — The Richmond Spiders women's golf team battled the cold and the wind on its way a team score of 13-over par in the final round of the More Than Golf Invitational at Old Barnwell. Richmond's final-round score, its best of the 54-hole event, moved UR to 47-over par for the tournament, good for fifth place in the 12-team field.
It was a great event! said Spiders coach Calle Barlow. The golf course was awesome and the girls learned more about the course each day and improved each day.
Richmond's top individual finisher was senior Hannah Lydic, who birdied her final three holes Tuesday to shoot 3-over par (76) and finish at 10-over par (229), tied for 11th among the field of 63 individual golfers.
Coach was a huge help in calming me down and encouraging me to finish strong, said Lydic of her rally at the end of Tuesday's round. I admit my mental game struggled today as we dealt with this craziness of the cold, wind, and a difficult course. Having a clear mind going into those last three holes was all thanks to Coach Calle.
Lydic registered the 16th top-20 finish of her career and her first since winning the Atlantic 10 Championship last season. Her 10-over par was also her lowest tournament score of the year.
I like having a senior lead the way! That's important for us going forward into a tough part of our spring championship season, said Barlow.
Junior Maya Beasley shot Richmond's lowest round of the day Tuesday, carding a 1-over 74 to finish the event tied for 18th at 12-over par (231). Beasley has now recorded top-20 finishes in both of Richmond's spring events this season.
Senior Olivia Wilkie finished at 14-over par (233), tied for 25th in the field. Wilkie led UR with 35 pars, fifth most of any player, as she registered her best finish since a runner-up at the season-opening Tribe Invitational.
Sophomore Katie Magner was one shot back at 15-over par (234), tied for 27th, and freshman Addie Doroh finished at 17-over par (236), tied for 32nd.
Columbia cruised to the team title at 16-over par, 10 shots clear of the rest of the field.
Richmond will return to action next week at the Low Country Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C. on March 9-10.
