Spider Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader Against Penn State

RICHMOND, Va. -Â For a second-straight Saturday, the Richmond Baseball team collected a doubleheader sweep to win the weekend series. Today, Richmond defeated Penn State, 3-0 in game one and 4-3 in game two.

Richmond, now 5-3 on the season, will head to Raleigh to face 17 NC State in midweek action on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on ACCNX.

In game one, Joey Giordano scattered three hits, three walks and struck out three over five innings of action to capture his second win of the season. He gave the ball over to Bijan Anvar who tossed two more scoreless frames allowing one hit and striking out two. Justin Gay collected his second save of the week with two hitless frames to close out the victory.

In the third, RJ Rickabaugh and Trevor Dosenbach both drew walks to start the frame. Dylan Winebrenner pushed Rickabaugh home from second on a Penn State error to put the Spiders on the board. Michael Elko brought in Dosenbach with a sacrifice fly to give UR a 2-0 lead.

Ryan Recio and Grant Kennedy each had two of the Spiders five hits. Jackson Kraemer picked up the other hit in the fourth inning before scoring on Noah Haugh's sacrifice fly to left.

In game two, the Spiders took the lead in the third. Haught led of the frame with a double, advanced to third on a failed pick off move by Penn State before scoring on Dosenbach's sacrifice fly. Winebrenner launched his first home run of the day and third of the season over the centerfield wall to make it 2-0.

Penn State got a run back in the top of the fourth off UR starter Chase Topolski before he regrouped and got the next three batters out with a ground out and two strikeouts. Topolski scattered four hits, one run, three walks with six strikeouts over four innings of work.
Mauricio Rodriguez struck out the side in the fifth but ran into some trouble in the sixth inning when he loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. Chayse Gruber took over on the mound and retired the Nittany Lions with two strikeouts and a fly out to get out of the jam.

In the top of the eight, Penn State tied the game at 2-2 with a solo home run off Gruber.
Winebrenner led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to deep left field for his team leading fourth home run of the season. Khris Morris followed with his first home run of the season for an insurance run.

The Nittany Lions got within one run in the top of the ninth with a solo home run, but Gruber was able to wiggle out of the jam and secure the victory.

The Spiders now lead the all-time series 12-10 and all 12 victories have come in Richmond. This was the first time since the Spiders have defeated the Nittany Lions since March 13, 2016.
