Spiders Homers Past Rams in Series Opener

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team hit three home runs Friday night at The Diamond to collect an 8-2 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over VCU after waiting out an hour and a half rain delay.
Richmond picked up the program's 30th victory of the season and put head coach Mik Aoki one career victory shy of 600. Game two of the league series between UR (30-17), now 11-14 in A-10 action, and VCU (14-35, 7-18 A-10) is set for Saturday with the first pitch set for 2 p.m. at The Diamond and streamed on ESPN+.
Jordan Jaffe put the Spiders on the board in the top of the first with a solo blast to center field for his 10th home run of the season.
After Brady O'Brien led off the second with his second triple of the season, he scored on Michael Elko's base hit to left. D.J. Pacheco reached on a single to right and took third on when Elko was tagged out on a play at the plate. Pacheco then scored on Connor Larson's base hit to left to give Richmond a 3-0 lead.
UR added a run in the fourth inning as Aaron Whitley, who reached base on an error, scored from second on a VCU throwing error. Elko, after drawing a walk to lead off the fifth, scored on another VCU miscue and pushed the Spiders lead to 5-0.
Richmond starter Jackson Hinchliffe (2-1) collected the victory after throwing five scoreless frames. He scattered two hits and two walks while fanning two. Chayse Gruber took over on the mound and allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts over three innings. Ryan Bilka shut down the Rams in the ninth, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Whitley hit his eighth home run in the top of the eighth inning, a solo shot over the centerfield wall. Pacheco got in on the long ball fun with a two-run home run to left in the top of the ninth to seal the 8-2 victory.
