Richmond Falls to No. 14 Virginia at Home

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond's women's lacrosse team fell 14-9 to No. 14 Virginia at Robins Stadium on Wednesday, under the lights. With the loss, the Spiders fall to 2-4, while UVA improves to 4-2.
Graduate student Whitney Liebler and junior Alexis Morton led the team with four points. Liebler netted a goal and tallied three assists, and Morton scored two goals and two assists. Senior Grace Muldoon netted two goals and tallied an assist, and senior Colleen Quinn, juniors Juliana Stanley and Charlotte Edwards, and sophomore Bridget Lonsinger each scored a goal.

Senior Clare McCooe led the team with five draw controls. In goal, sophomore keeper Abby Francioli collected 10 saves.

The Cavaliers opened the game with four straight goals to take the lead, 4-0. In response, the Spiders scored three unanswered goals by Edwards, Liebler, and Muldoon, trailing by one after the first quarter, 4-3. At the start of the second quarter, UVA was able to tally three more goals, 7-3. With a pass from Morton, Quinn put one past the keeper, scoring her 21st goal of the season, 7-4. Capitalizing on a free-position opportunity, Morton scored her first goal of the game to bring the Spiders within two, 7-5. Closing the first half, the Cavaliers scored three more goals to take a 10-5 lead going into halftime.

At the start of the second half, Muldoon and Lonsinger put two past the keeper to close the deficit, 10-7. UVA snuck another goal in the back of the cage and extended its lead by four, 11-7. In the last frame, Stanley and Morton scored back-to-back goals, but Virginia sealed the 14-9 victory by netting two more goals at the end of the fourth quarter.

The Spiders are back in action on Saturday, March 8, at 3:30 p.m. to open Atlantic 10 play against George Mason. The team will also celebrate its Team Impact game and will host a free clinic approximately 15 minutes after the conclusion of the game. Click here to register for the clinic.Â
