Spiders Ride Past Rams

RICHMOND, Va. – In the first-ever meeting between Rhode Island and the University of Richmond, the women's lacrosse team defeated the Rams 13-8 Saturday afternoon. In the win, Caroline Murphy reached a career milestone of 100 draw controls, and Grace Muldoon earned a season-high eight draw controls.

With the win, the Spiders improve to 7-5 overall and 5-1 in Atlantic 10 play. URI falls to 5-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play. This victory marks Richmond's fourth straight league win this season.

Colleen Quinn led the Spiders with five points (four goals, one assist), and Muldoon earned a hat trick. Juliana Stanley, Charlotte Edwards and Alexis Morton each netted two goals and tallied an assist.

In the first nine minutes of the contest, both teams exchanged goals and were tied 2-2. Then, with six straight goals scored by Richmond, the Spiders took an 8-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Richmond's three unanswered goals at the start of the second quarter pushed the lead to 11-2 with under four minutes to go in the first half. In response, Rhode Island scored its first and only goal of the quarter. Closing the first half, Muldoon netted a goal to give the Spiders a 12-3 lead going into halftime.

At the start of the second half, Rhode Island scored its fourth goal of the game, but the Spiders held a strong 12-4 lead. In response, Quinn scored her fourth goal of the day, closing the third quarter with a 13-4 lead in favor of the Spiders. In the final frame, URI scored four straight goals to cut the deficit to 13-8 but fell short. Richmond sealed its fourth straight conference win.

The Spiders will return to play next Saturday, April 5, at UMass for a rematch of the Atlantic 10 Championship game.
