Richmond Tops VCU Under the Lights, Francioli Reaches Career Milestone

RICHMOND, Va.  – The University of Richmond's women's lacrosse team defeated city rival VCU 10-8 on Wednesday night at Robins Stadium. Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Francioli reached a career milestone of 200 saves.

With the win, the Spiders improve to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Rams fall to 5-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Whitney Liebler led Richmond with a career-high six points (two goals, four assists). Colleen Quinn followed with two goals and two assists, and Alexis Morton tallied three points on two goals and one assist. Grace Muldoon, Juliana Stanley, Charlotte Edwards and Bridget Lonsinger each netted a goal.

In goal, Francioli collected 13 saves in 60 minutes of play and saved all seven of the Rams' free-position shots.

The Spiders were first to attack, scoring the first four goals and ending the first quarter with a 4-0 lead. At the start of the second quarter, VCU netted two goals to cut the deficit to two, 4-2. Richmond scored its only goal of the second quarter right before the Rams scored a last-second goal, with the Spiders taking the 5-3 at halftime.

VCU scored at the start of the second half, but the Spiders quickly responded with two goals to take a 7-4 lead. In the final frame, both teams exchanged goals, with the Spiders scoring back-to-back goals to lead 10-5. The Rams went on a three-goal run at the end of the fourth quarter but ultimately fell short. Richmond sealed its third-straight conference win, 10-8.

The Spiders are back in action Saturday, March 29, at 11 a.m. and will welcome first-time foe Rhode Island to Robins Stadium.
