Historic First: Richmond Dominates Georgia Tech for First NCAA Tournament Win

LOS ANGELES – Led by Maggie Doogan with 30 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, the University of Richmond women's basketball team made history Friday evening in Los Angeles as the No. 8-seeded Spiders defeated No. 9 Georgia Tech 74-49 in the NCAA Tournament First Round. With the win, Richmond picked up its first NCAA Tournament victory in program history, in addition to its first win over the Yellow Jackets, and improved to 28-6 overall while the Yellow Jackets ended their season at 22-11.

How it Happened
Georgia Tech quickly got on the board with a layup before Addie Budnik responded on the other end with a jumper to tie the game at two. After the Yellow Jackets managed to get off a three pointer, Maggie Doogan, with back-to-back treys, sparked a 12-0 run with efforts from Budnik and Alston for a 17-7 lead for Richmond with 1:16 left in the opening frame. Alyssa Jimenez ended the frame following a layup from the opposition with a layup of her own to close the first quarter with the Spiders leading 19-7.
GT capitalized on a triple to open the second 10 minutes to cut the Richmond lead to nine, before Doogan sparked another 11-0 run to give the Spiders a 20-point lead, 30-10. GT then managed another trey, but Doogan immediately responded on the other end with one of her own. A 10-0 run from the Yellow Jackets would cut the lead down to 10, 33-23, but a final layup from Doogan kept the Spiders ahead by 12, 35-23.
Budnik opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer before GT posted a layup to keep UR within 13, 38-25. Doogan then sparked a 4-0 run for a 17-point advantage. After the Yellow Jackets scratched back to 12, 42-30, Budnik sparked an 8-0 run for Richmond with contributions from Faith Alston and Doogan. The opposition then managed to post back-to-back buckets before two free throws from Doogan ended the quarter with the Spiders ahead 53-34.
Doogan opened the fourth quarter with a made free throw before GT posted a jumper for a 54-36 UR lead. The Yellow Jackets followed the play with a free throw before a 7-0 run for the Spiders pushed the lead to 61-37. Following a three-point play from the Yellow Jackets, Doogan again capitalized from deep for a 24-point Spider advantage with 4:31 left in the game. After exchanging a few points on each end, Ullstrom ended the game with a layup, while Alicia Newell added an exclamation point with one of her own. GT got off one final free throw as the Spiders notched their first NCAA Tournament win, 74-49.

Notes on the Game
- Richmond was paced by Maggie Doogan, who led the team with 30 points in addition to a career-high 15 rebounds and dished out six assists. She shot 11-of-18 from the field, 5-of-8 from deep and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Doogan also added a block to her stat sheet.
- Addie Budnik also finished the game in double figures with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. She tallied seven rebounds, an assist and a block.
- Alyssa Jimenez posted a team-high two steals while Katie Hill added five assists on the evening.
- As a team, the Spiders shot 30-of-60 (50%) from the floor, 9-of-23 (39.1%) from deep and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. In addition, the Spiders posted 37 rebounds, 19 assists, two blocks and four steals.
- Richmond notched its first win in a NCAA Tournament game and pushed its NCAA postseason record to 1-4. The 25 point win margin is the largest margin of victory for a team in its first NCAA Tournament win since 2012 (Delaware 73, Little Rock 42). In addition, the Spiders saw the largest margin of victory for team seeded 8th or higher in the Round of 64 or later since 2019 (No, 8 Michigan def. No. 9 Kansas State 84-54) and had the largest margin of victory for a non-power conference team since 2021 (Missouri State 64, Wright State 39).
- The Spiders also notched their first win over Georgia Tech, moving the series to 1-2 dating back to 1985.
- Richmond saw its first win over an ACC team since a 74-65 output at Virginia on Nov. 28, 2021.
- Doogan joins Lauren Cox (Baylor) as the only player to post 30 points, 15 rebounds and five assists in an NCAA Tournament game in the last 20 years and the only D-I player to reach those totals in a game this season.
- The Spiders posted the first NCAA win for the Atlantic 10 since Dayton defeated DePaul in 2022 in the First Four and posted the first win by an A-10 team in the Round of 64 of the NCAA Tournament since 2016 (Duquesne def. Seton Hall)
