Richmond Fights to the Finish, Falls to No. 1 UCLA in NCAA Second Round

LOS ANGELES – The University of Richmond women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with No. 1 UCLA, but fell short in the final two quarters as the No. 8-seeded Spiders ended their season in the program's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament Second Round, 84-67, to the top-ranked Bruins. UCLA clinched a spot in the Sweet 16 as the Spiders end the historic 2024-25 season at 28-7 overall, 17-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference action, 12-2 inside the Robins Center, 11-1 in away games and a 5-4 mark in neutral-site contests.

How it Happened
UCLA's Lauren Betts got things rolling before Rachel Ullstrom capitalized on a jumper down on the other end. After exchanging a couple of baskets, Ally Sweeney and Maggie Doogan combined for five points for a 9-8 Richmond lead. UCLA ended the scoring drought with two made free throws, but Doogan was ready on the other end with a layup. UCLA then notched a second-chance jumper before a trey from Addie Budnik and two made free throws from Faith Alston gave Richmond a four-point advantage, 16-12. A 4-0 spurt from the Bruins tied the game at 16 before Doogan and Ullstrom combined for four points to build the Spiders' lead to 20-16. Betts netted a layup down low to end the quarter with Richmond on top by two, 20-18.
Doogan pushed the Spiders' lead back up to four, 22-18, before a triple from the Bruins sparked a 7-0 run to give UCLA a three-point lead, 25-22. After exchanging a few points, another 7-0 run for UCLA gave the opposition an eight-point lead, 34-26, with 3:46 left in the quarter. Doogan and Budnik combined for six points between two free throws from the Bruins to cut the deficit to five, 34-29. After two more made free throws from UCLA, a 7-0 run for Richmond, with efforts from Budnik and Ullstrom, sent the Spiders into the locker room tied at 36.
The Bruins found their footing in the third quarter, outscoring the Spiders 29-7 in the frame. After a triple from UCLA opened the quarter, Sweeney responded on the other end to keep the game tied at 39. An and-one play from Betts gave UCLA back the lead, 42-39, but Doogan kept the Spiders within one with a layup. Despite Doogan's effort, the Bruins went on a 10-0 run to build an 11-point lead, 52-41, before Ullstrom ended Richmond's scoring drought with a layup. A 13-0 run from UCLA would end the quarter with the Spiders trailing 65-43.
Doogan opened the fourth quarter with a free throw before the two teams exchanged points as UCLA maintained a 20-point lead. Doogan posted a layup with 3:55 left in the game, sparking a 7-0 run for Richmond to bring the deficit down to 15 points, 80-65. Two layups from UCLA would end the game as Budnik posted her final two points in her career off a layup to close it out, 84-67.
