ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Senior Patrick Isztwan collected his third top-20 finish of the season as the Spiders finished the 54-hole Sea Palms Invitational in a tie for sixth place Saturday. The Spiders, who entered the day in third place, combined for a team score of 9-over par (293) in Round 3, their highest since the opening round of last October's Furman Intercollegiate (+17).
"It was one of those days where not much went right," said Spiders coach Adam Decker. "It was bbviously a bad finish and we need to use it as motivation for the remaining events of the regular season, as well as the A-10 tournament."
Richmond's streak of eight straight top-five team finishes came to an end. Richmond tied for sixth with Francis Marion and Wright State, behind Xavier (+5), Villanova (+3), Drexel (E), Davidson (-5), and champion UNCG (-21) on the 20-team leaderboard.
Isztwan followed his opening-round 66 with rounds of 72 and 73 to finish the event at 2-under par (211), tied with Drexel's Griffin Mitchell for 11th in the field of `120 golfers. It was Isztwan's best finish since a tie for ninth at the RedHawk Intercollegiate last October.
"Patrick was solid all week, and I'm really proud of his effort and composure in difficult conditions today," said Decker.
Sophomore Jack LaPiana registered his best finish of the season, tying for 25th at 2-over par (215).
Senior Cole Ekert tied for 47th at 5-over par (218), one shot in front of freshman Carson Baez, who tied for 49th.
Sophomore Quin Polin shot a 3-over 74 for the third straight day Saturday to finish the event at 9-over par (222), tied for 68th.
Competing as an individual, junior Drew Carlin bounced back from an 83 Friday to shoot a 1-over 72, finishing the event tied for 98th.
Richmond will return to action at the Haskins Invitational in Augusta, Georgia on April 5-6.
"We still have a really strong team and the focus will be on preparing for the next event," said Decker. "It's ok to get knocked down a little bit, but how we respond from here will determine the path forward."
