COLUMBUS, Ga. — Rising sophomore Carson Baez collected his second runner-up finish in as many months last week at the 96th Southeastern Amateur at the Country Club of Columbus. Baez played the event in 9-under par (201), with rounds of 68 (-2), 66 (-4), and 67 (-3), and had a six-foot birdie putt for the win on the 54th and final hole of regulation. The putt slid past, moving Baez into a playoff with the University of Kentucky's Luke Coyle, who birdied the first playoff hole for the win.
"It was a week to remember," said Baez. "My game was in a great spot all week, and just plotted my way along to get into a playoff."
The playoff was the second for Baez since early May. He placed second at the National Golf Invitational in Maricopa, Ariz. on May 18 after advancing to a playoff with Utah State's Enrique Karg.
"It stung to miss an easy six-footer in regulation to win, but I knew what to do this time for a playoff," added Baez. "This time was different, playing it smarter and giving myself a chance to win. However, it was his to win with a birdie to take the trophy. Nothing I could control about that. Still, I know what it takes to win and I won't give up."
Baez, coming off a rookie campaign which saw him earn All-Atlantic 10 honors and post the second-lowest scoring average in program history, will continue his offseason play at the Hoosier Amateur on August 5-7 in Bloomington, Ind.
