Spider Baseball Sweeps Opening Day Doubleheader Against Navy

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond baseball found different ways to come from behind in both Opening Day games to defeat Navy, 2-1 in both contests, Friday at Pitt Field.
The final game of the series is set for a 10 a.m. first pitch Saturday at Pitt Field. The game will also be streamed on ESPN-plus.
In game one, Richmond starter Esteban Rodriguez tossed three scoreless frames, scattering two hits and a walk while striking out two.
Navy got on the board first, picking up a run on two hits in the fourth off reliever Ryan Bilka in his first appearance as a Spider. Bilka settled and retired the next 12 Midshipmen, including four strikeouts.
Richmond tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when DJ Pacheco tripled down the right field corner to score Jack Arcamone who reached via a walk.
Jason Shockley picked up a strikeout to end the eighth. He got out of the ninth with a walk and three fly outs.
Brady O'Brien caught the final out of the top of the ninth then led off the bottom of the frame with a base hit to right center. Pacheco followed with a hit to center as O'Brien took third. Aidan O'Keefe put a bloop into short right field that dropped between the Midshipmen infielders as O'Brien scored.
Navy got on the board in the second game first, tallying a run in the fourth. The Midshipmen kept the Spiders bats quiet until the fourth inning when Aaron Whitley got a base hit to center.
Richmond broke through in the sixth inning. Jordan Jaffe laced a line drive down the right field line to score Connor Larson and Phil Bernstein to take the lead, 2-1.
Chase Topolski tossed 3.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Brian Reinke tossed two scoreless frames, picking up two strikeouts.
Chayse Gruber made his Spider debut, collecting the win after tossing a scoreless frame with a strikeout. Tyler Rigot collected the save after striking out the only batter he faced.
