RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond Baseball put together a five-run sixth inning to catapult past Navy Saturday to sweep the season opening series at Pitt Field, 9-4.
Richmond is back in action Tuesday when the squad heads to Williamsburg to face William & Mary at 3 p.m.
Jordan Jaffe got the Spiders on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run to straightaway center field.
Navy answered with a solo shot of their own to cut the lead in half off Spider starter Gerry Peacock. Peacock, making his first Spider appearance, tossed two innings allowing one run on one hit with a strikeout to get the victory.
Glenn Smith made his Spider debut taking over for Peacock. He tossed two scoreless frames, working around a walk. Sam Young took over in the fifth, picking up a strikeout before handing the game over to Sawyer Duarte with the bases loaded. Navy only got one run on a Spider miscue in the frame as Duarte got the next batters to pop out and strikeout.
Jack Arcamone got the Spider sixth inning rolling with a base hit to right and advanced to third on a Navy error that allowed DJ Pacheco to advance to second. Joey Wilga muscled a pinch-hit RBI base hit over the infield into short centerfield to score Arcamone. Pacheco came home on a double steal play to tally the second run of the frame and push the Spiders lead to 5-2. Aaron Whitley picked up an RBI base hit, then stole two bases before scoring with Phil Bernstein on a second Navy error in the inning.
Brian Reinke tossed a scoreless seventh, getting a double play and a strikeout. Chayse Gruber got the rock in the eighth. He allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout.
Jaffe picked up his third RBI of the game in the eighth, scoring Bernstein from second with a base hit through the infield to make it 9-3.
