Spiders Drop Tough Battle at No. 9 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Marta Buendia picked up a tough singles set victory against Meggie Navarro (VA) as the University of Richmond women's tennis team dropped a tough, 7-0, battle to No. 9 Virginia Friday afternoon. The Spiders fell to 0-3 on the 2023 season while UVA improved to 1-0.

In doubles action, juniors Leonor Oliveira and Carly Cohen dropped to Melodie Collard/Julia Adams (VA), 6-1, while Lara Bakhaya and Elizabeth Novak fell 6-1 to Elaine Chervinsky and Sara Ziodato (VA).

"It was a hard-fought match," said Head Coach Jacob Dunbar. "Virginia is a tough team and I think we made them earn it, so we're pleased with that. Overall, it was another great match for us to learn from and to build from."

In the singles matches, Buendia picked up a dominating second set win, 6-1, but ultimately fell to Meggie Navarro (VA), 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Oliveira gave No. 34 Julia Adams (VA) a tough battle, as she fell narrowly in the opening set, 6-4 and then the second set, 6-3.

The Spiders are back in action on Sunday, as the team travels to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on Wake Forest at 4:30 p.m.
