Taranov Records Singles Win, Spiders Fall at VCU Friday Evening

RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a singles win by freshman Mark Taranov, the University of Richmond men's tennis team fell in a hard fought, 6-1 battle against defending A-10 champion VCU Friday evening. The Spiders fell to 0-2 and 0-1 in A-10 play while the Rams improve to 2-0 and 1-0 in the A-10.
Taranov, who was the final finisher on the men's singles side, defeated Sam Baumgartner (VCU) 7-6, 2-6, 11-9 in a highly contested battle. Graduate John Walsh held his own against Romain Gales (VCU), but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles action, William Karpinski and Daniel Kliebhan narrowly fell to Bobichon/Bertimon (VCU), 6-4, while Alaister Burke/ Davis Wiley and John Walsh/ Alex Wernink each fell to their opponent, 6-2.
Richmond continues its slate of road games on Feb. 4 against Army in West Point, N.Y. at 8:30 a.m., before taking on Brown and Bingham on Feb. 5 in Vestal, N.Y. for a doubleheader.
