
Spiders Fall to No. 1 Virginia to Open 2023 Season

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– The University of Richmond men's tennis team dropped a tough 7-0 decision to No. 1 Virginia Sunday evening to open the 2023 season. Junior Sebastian Miano picked up a huge first set victory against William Woodall (VA), but ultimately fell 2-1.
In doubles action, junior Daniel Kliebhan and graduate William Karpinski fell to the top-ranked Cavaliers 6-2, while doubles teams John Walsh/Alex Wernink and Alaister Burk/Davis Wiley each fell 6-4 in their respective matches.
For singles, Kliebhan fell to No. 45 J vd Schulenburg (VA) 6-2, 6-0 while Wiley held his own, narrowly falling 6-4, 6-4 to Alexander Kiefer (VA). Miano began his singles match confidently, picking up a 6-2 victory in the opening set before Woodall rallied back and took the final two sets 6-2, 7-6, and the tiebreaker, 7-5. After a 6-3 opening singles set, Wernick forced a tiebreaker in the second set after matching Douglas Yaffa (VA) 7-5 but narrowly lost 13-11.
The Spiders continue the 2023 season next Friday, Jan. 20, taking on crosstown rival VSU on at 4 p.m. in Richmond.
