09/18/2022 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Spiders continued Atlantic 10 play Sunday afternoon as they hosted No. 12 Saint Louis at President's Field. The Billikens were averaging 3.44 goals per game going into today's contest, and Richmond held them scoreless until the 39th minute before ultimately falling 2-0.
With the loss, the Spiders drop to 1-6-2 (0-1-1 A-10) this season while Saint Louis improves to 9-1 (2-0 A-10).
"Overall, I'm pleased with how we battled the No. 12 team in the country today," said head coach Marty Beall. "This is a game we can learn from and grow as a program."
Richmond's first chance of the game came in the 7th minute when Caitlin Sutton took a hard shot off a Spider corner kick that was blocked, and Gianna Lucchesi secured the deflection and took another shot that sailed high right of the goal.
Saint Louis struck first in the 39th minute off one of its 16 corners in the game, and doubled its lead coming out of halftime in the 48th minute.
Lucchesi had another chance with a header off a corner in the 53rd, but couldn't reach the target as it went wide left of the goal.
Goalkeeper Taylor Montague kept the deficit at 2-0 in the 72nd minute when Saint Louis knocked a shot off the post, and the Billiken attacker had an open shot with the deflection that Montague was able to lay out for.
Casey Merz had Richmond's last solid chance in the match as she took a hard shot off a corner that went high over the crossbar in the 88th minute.
Montague finished the day with five saves, and Lucchesi had a team-high two shots while Sutton, Hannah Antonick, and Merz accounted for Richmond's other three shots.
The Spiders remain at home as they host A-10 opponent Duquesne Thursday, Sept. 22. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. from President's Field.
