HIGH POINT, N.C. – The 18th ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse team put together one of its best all-around efforts Saturday afternoon as the Spiders travelled to rival High Point and came away with a 16-5 victory over the Panthers at Vert Stadium. The two teams could meet again in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament, also held at Vert Stadium May 5-7.
The Spiders (8-4, 3-1 SoCon) held the high-scoring Panthers scoreless over the final 32:50 of the game and closed on a 12-1 scoring run after the game was tied at 4-4. The five goal output is the lowest total for High Point in a game since February 13, 2018 against Georgetown and the lowest in a SoCon game since 2017 (4 vs. Richmond).
Redshirt freshman goalie Zach Vigue (Apex, N.C.) posted a career-high 19 saves and a .792 save percentage while playing 57:18 in goal. Vigue had 16 saves in the first three quarters alone, picking up his fourth win of the year. True freshman Jared Chenoy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) controlled the faceoff, winning 12-of-20 and picking up nine ground balls.
Graduate attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) led eight different goal scorers in the win, scoring a game-high seven points. Lanchbury improved his point scoring streak to 55-straight games. The Tewaaraton Award nominee scored a game-high five goals and added two assists.
Junior attack Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) posted three goals in the first 20:21 of the game. Midfielders Luke Frankeny (Wilmington, N.C.) and Cooper Dainton (Hingham, Mass.) each added a pair of goals in the complete victory.
High Point (7-6, 2-2 SoCon) scored the game's first two goals before the Spiders called an early timeout to regroup. Richmond responded with four-straight goals as Young scored two while Frankeny and Lanchbury each added one. The Panthers would tally the next two goals but the Spiders would have another answer.
Richmond struck for five-straight goals, taking a 9-4 lead with 5:13 remaining in the opening half. Lanchbury scored twice while Dainton and Mitch Pfeiffer (Canandaigua, N.Y.) added a pair in less than a minute giving the Spiders the momentum.
High Point scored the final goal of the first half but the Spiders ended any doubt with a dominant third quarter. Richmond out-scored HPU 4-0 in the third quarter on its way to scoring the final seven goals of the game. Dainton added his second before back-to-back goals by Lanchbury in transition. The first came on a full length Hail Mary pass from defender Jake Saunders (Oakville, Ontario) that broke the back of the Panthers.
Jake Kapp (Pepper Pike, Ohio) added a long-pole goal late in the third quarter while Richmond chipped in two man-up opportunities in the fourth quarter. Frankeny's second of the game gave him 25 goals on the year while Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) scored the 16th goal of the game and his 20th of the year capping the scoring.
The Spiders close out the regular season at home next Saturday hosting VMI. Game time is set for noon at Robins Stadium with Senior Day festivities set prior to the game. Admission is FREE!
