Strong Second Half Propels Men’s Lacrosse To Victory Over Mercer

RICHMOND, Va. – The 18th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse team ran its series winning streak to eight-straight games against Mercer Saturday afternoon as the Spiders used a strong second half defeating the Bears 22-9 at Robins Stadium in Southern Conference action. The game marked the final SoCon regular season meeting between the Spiders and Bears as Mercer has announced it is leaving for the Atlantic Sun Conference next season.
Richmond (7-4, 2-1 SoCon) outscored Mercer 12-3 in the second half, including a 7-1 run midway through the game that broke it open. The Spiders' three-man attack of Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario), Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) and Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) continued their prolific scoring, accounting for 10 of the Spiders' 22 goals and 16 total points between them.
Dunn led the way with four goals and an assist while Lanchbury added three goals and three assists for a team-high six points. Young chipped in three goals and two assists while 11 different Spiders accounted for the remaining 12 goals.
Defensively, the game marked the fifth time this season the Spiders have held an opponent to single digit goals. Freshman defender Griffin Kology (Chatham, N.J.) led the way with a career-high five caused turnovers. Graduate Ray Baran (Berwyn, Pa.) led the way with six ground balls while freshman Jared Chenoy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won 13-of-20 faceoffs and picked up nine ground balls. Redshirt freshman Zach Vigue (Apex, N.C.) made nine saves in 55 minutes of action.
The Spiders jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the second quarter, getting goals from Luke Frankeny (Wilmington, N.C.) and Max Merklinger (Mendham, N.J.). Mercer (4-9, 1-2 SoCon) pulled within two in the second quarter and were within 9-6 with 1:07 remaining in the half. Young gave the Spiders a big goal in the closing seconds of the first half before Dunn added an early one in the third quarter.
Richmond put together five-straight goals, taking a 16-7 lead and ending any double. Young, Lanchbury and Frankeny each scored in the spurt while long-stick midfielder Jake Kapp (Pepper Pike, Ohio) and Mitch Pfeiffer (Canandaigua, N.Y.) added tallies. The Spiders closed out the game with four-straight goals over the final 8:32 of the game, including the second career goal for Chenoy.
The Spiders are on the road for the final time in the regular season next Saturday, travelling to rival High Point for a pivotal conference showdown. Faceoff is set for noon at Vert Stadium, the site of the 2022 SoCon Tournament.
