Richmond Secures 4-3 Road Win At George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team won the doubles point and picked up three singles wins to secure a 4-3 road win at George Mason Thursday.

The Spiders (5-6, 2-1 A-10) started the match by winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) took down Rishab Sardana and Erick Rivas, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles.

At No. 3 doubles, junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and graduate student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) fell 6-3 to Herman Jentoft and Luke Maxwell.

Freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win against Rithik Sardana and Ryan Charles at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, Kliebhan won in straight sets against Rithik Sardana, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. George Mason earned their first point after Rishab Sardana earned a 6-4, 6-4 win against Fernandez at No. 2 singles.

The Patriots tied the match at 2-2 when Charles won a tight third set tiebreaker against Walsh, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3 singles. Wernink pushed the Spiders lead to 3-2 after winning against Momin Khan, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the third set.

Erwin clinched the win with a straight-sets win against Rivas, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. In the final match Jentoft won a third set super tiebreaker against Keitelman, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) to make the final score 4-3.

Richmond will face James Madison on Saturday, April 3 at Noon at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
