
Spiders Drop Close 5-2 Match Against JMU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team won the doubles point but fell short in singles in a close 5-2 match against James Madison Saturday afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Courts. Three matches went to deciding third sets with JMU winning two to earn the win.
The Spiders (5-7, 2-1 A-10) started the match by winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) lost 6-3 against Alvaro Arce and Gonzalo Adis at No. 2 doubles.
Freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) held serve for a clutch 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles against Holden Koons and Paul Mendoza.
In the deciding doubles match, junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and graduate student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) earned a 6-2 win against Oscar Hernandez and William Karpinski at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the Dukes tied the match at 1-1 after Karpinski won in straight sets against Erwin, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. JMU took a 2-1 lead after Mendoza won against Walsh, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
James Madison took a 3-1 lead after Koons won in straight sets against Fernandez, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
Keitelman outlasted Mario Pena 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 at No. 6 singles to cut the lead to 3-2. Keitelman was trailing 4-5 in the third set before winning three games in a row to pick up the win.
The Dukes clinched the win with a comeback point at No. 2 singles as Hernandez won a third-set tiebreaker against Kliebhan, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3). Kliebhan forced a third set by winning a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5).
In the final match, Wernink won the first set 7-5 but dropped the second set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4). In the deciding set, Wenink fell in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) against Arce at No. 3 singles.
Richmond will have 11 days to prep for a rematch against William & Mary on Wednesday, April 14 at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
