
Men’s Tennis Falls In A-10 Opener Against VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team almost took an early lead in doubles but lost two tiebreakers and all six matches in singles against crosstown rival VCU Sunday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
The Spiders (1-5, 0-1 A-10) started the match with a competitive doubles point sending the final two doubles matches into tiebreakers to settle the point. Junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) earned a 6-3 win against Lleyton Cronje and Mario Duron at No. 3 doubles.
Both of the final doubles matches went the distance into tiebreakers, VCU came out on top in both as Inigo Torre Martin and Rayane Stable defeated junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and graduate student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.), 7-6 (7-1) at No. 2 doubles.
In the final doubles match, Charles Bertimon and Quentin Coulaud also won a tiebreaker against freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) at No. 1 doubles, 7-6 (7-2).
In singles, the Rams used the momentum from winning in doubles and didn't drop a set in singles play. David Cierny won in straight sets against Erwin, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Coulaud took down Walsh, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
Stable picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win against Keitelman at No. 6 singles and Torre Martin won in straight sets against Wernink, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Kliebhan fell short against Bertimon, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Fernandez battled to a tough loss at No. 1 singles against Cronje, 6-4, 6-4.
