Spiders Earn Tough 5-2 Home Win Against Norfolk State

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team swept the doubles point and held on in singles winning four of the six matches to secure a 5-2 home win against Norfolk State Sunday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
The Spiders (2-5) started the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. Junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) earned a 6-1 win against Ivan Ivars and Ibrahim Abbas at No. 3 doubles.
Junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and graduate student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) clinched the doubles point after taking down Andres Alcaraz and Santiago Rendon, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
In the final doubles match, freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) went to a tiebreaker with Federico Rebecchini and Ignacio Guevel at No. 1 doubles. Keitelman and Kliebhan won 7-6 (9-7) in the tiebreaker winning the last three points after trailing 6-7.
In singles, Fernandez gave the Spiders a 2-0 lead after winning in straight sets against Rebecchini, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Freshman Sebastian Miano (Barcelona, Spain) didn't drop a game in a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win against Abbas at No. 6 singles.
Walsh clinched the win with a tough third set win against Ivars, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Walsh dropped the second set tiebreaker 7-4 but bounced back to win the third set 6-2. Wernink made it 5-0 for the Spiders at No. 3 singles taking down Rendon, 7-5, 6-4.
Norfolk State would earn two points at No. 5 singles and No. 2 singles in third-set tiebreakers. Guevel won against Erwin, 6-2, 0-6, 7-6 (7-2). Erwin fought off a couple of match points to force a tiebreaker but came up short.
In the final match, Alcaraz won against Kliebhan, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 2 singles. Kliebhan battled to force a third set after winning the second set 7-5.
Richmond will host Delaware on Saturday, March 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
