
Spiders Drop Road Match at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team had three matches go the distance but didn't pull out victories in a 6-1 road loss at William & Mary Friday at the Millie West Tennis Facility.
The Spiders (1-4) started the match by losing two of the three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) fell to Lev Kazakov and Joseph Brailovsky, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
The Tribe clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win as Brenden Volk and George Davis took down freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) at No. 1 doubles.
In the final doubles match, junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and graduate student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) went unfinished against Finbar Talcott and Daniel Pellerito, 4-3, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Volk won in straight sets against Fernandez, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Talcott earned a 6-2, 7-5 win against Keitelman at No. 6 singles. At No. 5 singles, Brailovsky won in straight sets against Erwin, 6-2, 6-3.
In the final three matches, all were pushed to three sets. Sebastian Quiros earned a close three set win against Wernink, 0-6, 6-0, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Kliebhan came back to defeat Kazakov, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the third set at No. 2 singles. Davis won a third set match against Walsh, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 4 singles. Walsh battled to force a tiebreaker in the third set but came up just short, 8-6 in the breaker.
Richmond will welcome crosstown rival VCU to the Westhampton Tennis Courts on Sunday, March 7 at 1 p.m.
