Richmond Comeback Falls Short In 4-3 Loss Against Delaware

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost the doubles point and battled back in singles tying the match at 3-3 before falling short 4-3 against Delaware Saturday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
With the match tied at 3-3, freshman Sebastian Miano (Barcelona, Spain) went to a deciding third set and fell short against Guilherme Valdoleiros, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Miano won a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) but couldn't close the match in a second set tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6). Valdoleiros used the momentum from the second set win and won the third set 6-0.
The Spiders (2-6) started the match by dropping the doubles point. Richmond lost two of the three doubles matches to fall behind, 1-0.
Junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) fell to James Wilkinson and Liam Hedlund at No. 2 doubles, 6-4.
At No. 1 doubles, freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) battled to a 6-4 win against Pierce Gilheany and Julian Chousa.
In the final doubles match, junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and graduate student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) held a 5-2 lead before Pierre-Louis Dodens and Luis Molina stormed back to clinch the point for Delaware, 7-5.
In singles, Delaware took a 2-0 lead after Dodens won in straight sets against Kliebhan, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Wernink got Richmond on the board with a straight-sets win against Gilheany, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
Fernandez tied the match at 2-2 with a straight-sets win at No. 1 singles against Wilkinson, 6-3, 6-4. Delaware took the lead at 3-2 after Molina won against Keitelman, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), at No. 6 singles.
Walsh tied the match at 3-3 with a comeback win at No. 4 singles against Chousa, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Walsh forced a third set by winning the second set, 6-3 and won the third 6-4.
Richmond will play again tomorrow and begin A-10 play by hosting Duquesne on Sunday, March 21 at 11 a.m.
