
Spiders Sweep Home Opener Against Methodist, 7-0

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches to sweep Methodist, 7-0 Friday afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
The Spiders (1-2) started the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) earned a 6-2 win against Trent Harner and Coleman Baker at No. 2 doubles.
Freshman Alaister Burke (Richmond, Va.) and Freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win against Hayden Wilfong and Kayhahn Alikhani at No. 3 doubles.
In the final doubles match, junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and graduate student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) defeated Jordan Theron and Patrick Newsome, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Kliebhan picked up his first collegiate win with a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles against Henry Murray, 6-2, 6-0.
Keitelman gave Richmond a 3-0 lead after winning in straight sets against Henry Blanco, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Sebastian Miano (Barcelona, Spain) clinched the win for the Spiders at No. 5 singles against Wilfong, 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Wernink won in straight sets against Harner, 6-0,6-4 to give the Spiders a 5-0 lead. Fernandez made it 6-0 after a straight-sets win at No. 1 singles against Henry Murray, 6-3, 6-2.
In the final match, Burke went the distance at No. 6 singles against Coleman Baker. Baker won the first set, 6-4, but Burke forced a third set with a 6-3 win in the second. In the final set, Burke held a 4-3 lead and was able to win two of the next three games to win the set, 6-4.
Richmond will head back on the road to face Liberty on Thursday, March 4 at 3 p.m. in Lynchburg, Virginia.
