Richmond Drops Road Match At Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost the doubles point and couldn't recover in singles in a 7-0 loss against Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

The Spiders (0-2) started the match by losing all three doubles matches. Freshman Alaister Burke (Richmond, Va.) and junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) lost at No. 3 doubles to Tomislav Podvinski and Oliver Tobisch, 6-1.

The Monarchs clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles after Younes Lalami and Jannik Glesse defeated junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and graduate student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.).

In the final doubles match, freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) battled but fell short against Luca Maldoner and Nicola Vidal, 6-4.

In singles, ODU went up 2-0 after Tobisch won in straight sets against freshman Sebastian Miano (Barcelona, Spain), 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

The Monarchs earned another point at No. 3 singles as Vidal defeated Walsh, 6-2, 6-1. ODU clinched the win after Lalami won in straight sets against Wernink, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

Fernandez lost at No. 1 singles against Maldoner, 6-1, 6-4 and Keitelman lost against Francois Le Tallec, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

In the final match, Kliebhan won the first set 6-3 against Podvinski but fell 6-4 in the second set to force a third set super tiebreaker. Podvinski won the super tiebreaker, 10-8, to give ODU a 7-0 sweep against the Spiders.

Richmond will return home for a double-header home opener on Sunday, Feb. 28 against Hampden-Sydney College (10:30 a.m.) and Methodist (2:30 p.m.) at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
