Spiders Fall to Dayton on Senior Day

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team closed out the regular season Sunday afternoon by hosting Atlantic 10 foe Dayton at President's Field for Senior Day. The Spiders fell 3-0 to the Flyers to finish the regular season 7-9-1 overall and 5-5-0 in conference play, including an impressive 6-1-1 mark at home. Dayton finishes the regular season 11-5-2 overall and 8-2-0 in conference play.
This season marks the most conference wins and home wins since 2011 when the Spiders won seven and six, respectively.
Dayton struck early on Sunday with a header by Laney Huber off a cross in the fourth minute, and Jessica Sheldon doubled Dayton's lead in the 28th minute when she caught the deflection off a Spider defender and sent a hard strike low into the left of the box. The Flyers went into halftime with a 2-0 lead, and extended their lead to 3-0 in the 50th minute when Itala Gemelli netted one from right inside the 18-yard box.
Starting goalkeeper Claire Hinkle made three saves before receiving a red card in the 64th minute, forcing Taylor Montague to take over for the remainder of the game. Montague collected a pair of saves in the final 27 minutes.
The Spiders were outshot 10-2 in the game, with Molly Wierman taking both of Richmond's shots, and both of them were on target.
To celebrate Senior Day, Richmond honored its 10 graduating seniors in a pregame ceremony at midfield. The 10 seniors who were recognized included the following:
Molly Morgan, a forward from Upper Arlington, Ohio
Jaclyn Kemly, a midfielder from Franklin Lakes, N.J.
Evyn Magenbauer, a defender from Salem, Va.
Caroline Lydecker, a defender From Ormond Beach, Fla.
Sarah Nguyen, a midfielder from Falls Church, Va.
Alyssa Hendricks, a midfielder from Grimes, Iowa
Camryn Williams, a defender from Saint Leonard, Md.
Victoria Huxtable, a defender from Columbia, Md.
Taylor Coleman, a defender from Indian Trail, N.C.
Claire Hinkle, a goalkeeper from Tipp City, Ohio
The Spiders now await final seedings to find out who their opponent will be in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship. The top eight teams will compete in the championship with the top four teams hosting the first round on either Saturday, Oct. 30 or Sunday, Oct. 31.
