Richmond Falls to Dayton in A-10 Quarterfinals
10/31/2021 | Women's Soccer
DAYTON, Ohio – The 2021 season came to a close for the University of Richmond women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon as the seventh-seeded Spiders fell 3-1 to No. 2 Dayton on the road in the Atlantic-10 Championship Quarterfinals. Sunday marked Richmond's first appearance in the A-10 postseason since 2014 after the Spiders won their most regular season conference games since 2011.
Richmond finishes the season with a 7-10-1 record (5-5 in conference play) while Dayton improves to 12-5-2 and advances to host Saint Louis in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 5.
"I'm very proud of how hard this team competed for each other today. It was a great atmosphere for the A-10 Quarterfinals, and congrats to Dayton on a well-played game," said head coach Marty Beall.
Dayton struck first when Marlee Taylor snuck one in off a cross from Jessica Sheldon in the sixth minute, but Emma Coleman would answer that with her third goal of the season shortly after to get the Spiders on the board in the 25th minute. TJ Anderson secured possession after a Flyer turnover at midfield and sent the ball up to Coleman who drove in with a long shot that beat the Dayton keeper low and to the right.
The score would stand at 1-1 until the 61st minute when Dayton retook the lead off Laney Huber's hard strike from the top right corner of the 18-yard box, and the Flyers extended their lead to 3-1 in the 87th minute on Itala Gemelli's 12th goal of the year.
Goalkeeper Taylor Montague stood tall with eight saves on the day, four in each half, to keep the margin slim. The Spiders were outshot 22-9 in the game, and were led by Coleman who put up a team-high three shots. Jessie Prillaman had two shots while four other Spiders had one.
"I want to give a special shoutout to our seniors. I'm very grateful for all the time and energy they have put into this program, and each of them have played an integral role in returning this program back to prominence in the A-10," said Coach Beall. "While today is a sad day with our season ending, I'm very excited for the future of this program with nine starters returning. The future is bright for Spider Soccer."
