
Spiders Earn 5-2 Win Against The Citadel

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and four wins in singles to pick up a 5-2 win against the Citadel on Friday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts. The second match was cancelled due to the length of the first match.
The Spiders started the match by winning all three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, senior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) earned a 6-1 win against Leo Du Plooy and Phillips Quinn.
Sophomores John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win against Will Graham and Josiah Schainblatt at No. 3 doubles.
In the final doubles match, sophomore Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and senior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) outlasted Gavin Stewart and Zvonko Bencedic, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Evans won in straight sets against Graham, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Quinn gave the Citadel a point after a straight-sets win against Erwin, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Walsh fell just short in the third set against Bencedic, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Nick Mueller (Winchester, Va.) earned his first-ever collegiate win against Schainblatt, 7-6, 7-5 at No. 6 singles. Mueller won the first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), and battled to a 7-5 second set win.
Senior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) edged Jack Pyritz, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. Fernandez won against Stewart, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Richmond will head out on the road to face Elon on Saturday, March 7, at 1 p.m.
