
Spiders Drop Close Road Match At Elon

ELON, N.C. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost the doubles point and came close in singles before falling 5-2 on the road at Elon Saturday.
The Spiders (4-6) started the match by losing the doubles point after dropping the first two matches. At No. 2 doubles, senior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) fell to Camilo Ponce and Sam Dively, 6-3.
The Phoenix clinched the doubles point after sophomores John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) lost 6-3 to Chung-Han Tsai and Dino Bonetta at No. 3 doubles.
In the final doubles match, sophomore Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and senior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) were leading 4-3 against Kyle Frankel and Nicholas Condos at No. 1 doubles when the point was clinched.
In singles, Frankel won in straight sets against Fernandez, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. At No. 4 singles, Tsai won in straight sets against senior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.), 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Ricky Bell (Rockville, Md.) earned a 6-2, 6-0 win against Dively at No. 6 singles. Evans picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win against Condos at No. 2 singles.
Elon's Ponce edged Erwin, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Walsh fell short against Bonetta in a third-set super tiebreaker 5-7, 7-5, 10-2.
Richmond will 14 days to prepare for a home double-header against Methodist and Coppin State on March 21 at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
