
Richmond Sweeps Regular Season Finale Doubleheader

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team earned a pair of 7-0 sweeps against Southern Virginia and Virginia Wesleyan to finish the regular season Thursday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
Richmond finishes the regular season with a 16-5 record, including four-straight wins and went 4-1 against Atlantic 10 opponents.
In the first match against Southern Virginia, the Spiders won the doubles point after winning two of three doubles matches. Junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) won 6-3 against Paul Monsen and Ben Spencer at No. 2 doubles.
Freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) clinched the doubles point with a tough 7-6 (2) win against Kukutla Motlojoa and Daniel Blonquist at No. 1 doubles. Fernandez and Keitelman trailed 4-1 before rallying to force a tiebreaker at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, the Spiders won 7-2 to clinch the doubles point.
In the final doubles match, sophomore Joe Nardini (Arlington, Va.) and senior Brice Polender (Lake Bluff, Ill.) lost a close battle against Zachary Bowers and Andrew Blonquist 7-6 (3) at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, freshman Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) only dropped one game in a win against Bowers, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Polender won in straight sets against Andrew Blonquist, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Richmond clinched the win after Walsh won against Daniel Blonquist, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Lovitt earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles and Fernandez won against Monson 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
In the final match, junior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) outlasted Motlojoa in a third set super tiebreaker 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4). Evans won the second set 7-5 and won 10-4 in the super breaker.
In the second match of the day, Richmond earned a 7-0 sweep and won all three doubles matches against Virginia Wesleyan.
In doubles, Evans and Erwin took down Paul Gladstone and Michael Portera, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Walsh and Lovitt picked up a 6-1 win against Timonthy Tep and Anthony Wilson to clinch the doubles point. Fernandez and Keitelman won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles against Mitchell Perry and Nick Gunther.
In singles, the Spiders started fast winning first sets on all six courts. At No. 5 singles, Nardini won aginast Wilson, 6-2, 6-1. Keitelman earned a 6-1, 6-1 win against Perry at No. 6 singles.
Erwin clinched the win at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Gunther. Polender remained hot taking down Andreas Combos, 6-0, 6-0. Polender finished his senior day with two singles wins.
At No. 2 singles, Walsh won against Tep, 6-1, 6-3 and Fernandez defeated Gladstone, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
