Spiders Drop 4-3 Match At ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team fell just short of a third-straight 4-3 win falling on the road at East Carolina, 4-3, Friday night at the ECU indoor tennis center.

The Spiders won the doubles point taking wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Joe Nardini (Arlington, Va.) and junior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) defeated Will Bissett and Simon Labbe, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles. ECU's Diogo Marques and Austin Allen earned a 6-2 win against junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), at No. 2 doubles.

In the deciding doubles match, freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) won a tough battle 7-5 against Wisse Jonker and Ronny Georgi at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, ECU tied the match at 1-1 when Jonker won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, against Fernandez at No. 3 singles.

Senior Brice Polender (Lake Bluff, Ill.) gave the Spiders a 2-1 lead with a third set win against Marques, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. The Pirates tied the match at 2-2 after Vlad Anghel won in three sets against Evans, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

ECU took a 3-2 lead when Georgi won in straight sets against Walsh, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4 singles. Richmond tied the match at 3-3 after Lovitt earned a comeback win against Labbe, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.

With the match tied at 3-3, ECU's Bissett was able to earn a comeback win against freshman Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.

Richmond (3-2) will look to bounce back with a match against Appalachian State on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Noon in Greenville.
