
Richmond Upsets A-10 Foe Dayton, 4-3

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Richmond men's tennis team is getting used to winning close matches after its fourth 4-3 win of the season in a key Atlantic 10 battle at Dayton Sunday at the Five Seasons Family Sports club.
The Spiders (6-2) won a very close doubles point to go ahead 1-0 in the match. Junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) earned a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Langford Hills and Steven Karl.
The Flyers picked up a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles after Jordan Benjamin and Spencer Richey took down freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.).
The Spiders won the doubles point after sophomore Joe Nardini (Arlington, Va.) and junior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) defeated Joe Demarco and Lorenzo Rollhauser, 7-6 (7-3), at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Dayton tied the match at 1-1 after Hills won in straight sets against Fernandez, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Freshman Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) picked up a big win at No. 6 singles against Will Harper, 6-2, 6-3.
The Flyers tied the match at 2-2 after Benjamin won in straight sets against senior Brice Polender (Lake Bluff, Ill.), 6-3, 6-3. Evans bounced back with a 7-6 (4), 5-2 win against Richey at No. 3 singles. Evans won the first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4) and was up 5-2 in the second set before Richey had to retire.
Dayton tied the match up again at 3-3 when Demarco earned a 6-4, 6-1 win against Walsh at No. 5 singles.
In the deciding match, Lovitt clinched the victory for the Spiders with a convincing straight-sets win against Karl, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
Richmond will face Binghamton (Feb. 22) and Navy (Feb. 23) in Annapolis, Maryland next weekend.
