FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team took down its fourth Atlantic 10 opponent of the season with a 4-3 win at George Mason on Thursday afternoon.
The Spiders jumped out to an early lead, taking the doubles point with wins on courts 1 and 3. Seniors Caleb Troy and James Aronson took down Pally Ray and Daniel Gutierrez, 6-3, while Matt Fernandez paired with George Lovitt for a 6-3 victory over Carter Bradford and Guiliano Buzoianu.
The doubles point would prove to be the difference, as both teams went on to win three singles matches. Aronson posted a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Gutierrez, and Klein Evans downed Jakob Nielsen on court 3, 6-3, 6-0.
Lovitt moved to 2-0 on the day with the clinching 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win at No. 5by defeating Ray for the second time in the match.
"I'm proud of George for battling it out today," Aronson said after the match. "He left it all out there, and we're all proud to be his teammate today. We all have to refocus for George Washington Sunday, which is a big conference match for us."
The Spiders and Colonials will battle it out on Sunday at the Westhampton Courts, with match time set for 2 p.m. The match, which was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, was moved due to impending inclement weather.
