04/27/2018 | Men's Tennis
ORLANDO, Fla. – After dropping the doubles point and going down a set on three courts, the University of Richmond men's tennis team rallied to take a 4-2 victory over No. 4 seed George Washington and advance to the semifinals of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship.
George Washington powered through doubles action with wins on courts 1 and 2. Matt Fernandez and George Lovitt downed William Tuteckey and Kaan Tuna on court 3, but it wasn't enough to give the Spiders the lead.
Freshman Joe Nardini got the Spiders on the board early in singles play with a dominant performance on court 6. He posted the 6-1, 6-1 win over Alman Sahoo to tie things up at 1-1.
Klein Evans bounced back after a doubles loss to take down GW's Tutecky, 6-2, 6-2, on court 4 and give Richmond a 2-1 lead. The advantage was short lived, as the Colonials won on court 2 to tie the match for the second time.
The battle came down to the final three courts where Caleb Troy, James Aronson and Lovitt remained. After dropping his first set, Lovitt bounced back to take the win on court 5 over Jakub Behun, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3. Just a minute later, Troy completed the three-set comeback on court 1, defeating Chris Reynolds, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch the match and send the Spiders to the A-10 Semifinals.
Richmond will now face off with crosstown rival VCU for a berth into the A-10 Championship match. The Spiders and Rams are scheduled to face off on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the USTA National Campus.
