UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – In just its second match on the newly-renovated Westhampton Courts and in windy conditions, the University of Richmond men's tennis team rebounded from last weekend to post a decisive 6-1 win over A-10 foe Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon.
The Spiders move to 3-1 in conference play with the win, which will help them push for a top seed heading into next month's A-10 Tournament in Orlando.
"I am very proud of how the guys handled the match today," head coach Houston Barrick said after the win. "The conditions weren't ideal out there, but we found ways to win the big points."
The Spiders jumped out to an early lead after taking the doubles point with wins on courts 1 and 2. Caleb Troy and James Aronson got things going with a 6-2 win at No. 1, before Brice Polender and Klein Evans clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
"Our doubles continues to improve, and has become a great strength of this team," Barrick added. "That point was critical to get things going for us today."
Singles continued to go the Spiders' way, as five of the six first sets went in favor of the home team. Aronson ran away with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Beekman Schaeffer on court 2, before Joe Nardini was able to take a 6-1, 6-3 win on court 6 over Johnnie Massart to extend the Spider lead.
Evans used a comeback win in his first set to take a 6-4, 6-3 victory on court 3 over Peter Dewitt and George Lovitt came back in the second set for a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 4 over Andre Fick to make it 5-0 for the Spiders. The final two courts were then split, with Troy taking a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 1 to round out the 6-1 win.
Richmond returns to action on Friday, March 30, when they host Duquesne in another A-10 matchup. Match time is to be determined.
