Spiders Down Bryant, 4-3
02/03/2018 | Men's Tennis
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team is no stranger to dramatic matches this season.
The Spiders played their third 4-3 match of 2018 on Saturday afternoon and came out on top, defeating Bryant in a neutral-site matchup in Annapolis.
"What a great team win," head coach Houston Barrick said after the match. "Doubles was a tough loss for us, as we were serving for the match at No. 3 doubles but couldn't close it out. To rally back and grab four singles wins like we did was so exciting."
Caleb Troy and James Aronson pulled off a 7-5 win on court 1 over Bryant's Matt Kuhar and Artor Jakubowski, but the Bulldog posted wins on courts 2 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead.
The Spiders took control in singles play, winning on four of six courts to post a 4-3 win. Aronson logged his second win of the day with a 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Jorge Isaias Ortiz-Garcia at No. 4. Matt Fernandez took down Jakubowski on court 3, 6-3, 6-3, while Klein Evans defeated Guido Argentini, 6-3, 6-1.
With both squads tied at 3-3, it was freshman Joe Nardini who was left battling in a third set on court 6. The rookie pulled off a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 win over Trent Massam to clinch the match for Richmond and move to 2-0 in dual match play as a Spider.
"Joe left everything he had out on the court and played his best when his team needed him the most," Barrick added. "Joe has worked hard all year long, and I couldn't be happier to see him succeed."
The Spiders will now stay in Annapolis to face host Navy on Sunday, February 4. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
