Spiders Down Rhode Island, 2-1
09/28/2017 | Women's Soccer
KINGSTON, R.I. – It was a back-and-forth battle for the University of Richmond women's soccer team on Thursday night, but the Spiders used two second-half goals to take a 2-1 Atlantic 10 victory over host Rhode Island.
"Rhode Island is a very good team," head coach Peter Albright said after the win. "They just beat Vanderbilt out of the SEC. This was a very important win for our team."
Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening half, sending them into the locker room in a scoreless tie despite an 8-1 lead in shots for the Rams.
The second stanza was a different story, as the Spiders found an offensive rhythm.
The opening goal came in the 62nd minute, when sophomore Brooke Beam received a pass from senior Olivia Aha at the top of the box, sending a shot past the Rhode Island keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Aha extended the lead when she received the ball alone on the left side of the box, taking a shot that sailed into the net. Senior Emily Drummond was credited with the assist.
Rhode Island cut the Spider lead in half in the 73rd minute on a second chance header shot off of a corner kick, but it would not be enough. Senior goalkeeper Katie Brennan managed to keep the Rams off of the board for the remainder of the game.
"The goals from Brooke and Olivia tonight were terrific," Albright added. "Brennan was very good between the pipes, and Alexis Pringle and Emily Drummond were immense on the defensive line."
Brennan finished the game with three saves in each half. Rhode Island outshot Richmond, 20-7, with four of the Spiders' shots coming on net.
The Spiders return to action on Sunday, October 1, when they travel to face George Mason. Kickoff in Fairfax, Virginia, is set for 1 p.m.
