RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by picking up its first victory of the spring season, dominating singles action en route to a 6-1 win over Bucknell.
“It's always good to get the first win of the spring and get things rolling,” Head Coach Ben Johnson said. “I was happy with the way our guys came out with a lot of energy and played well on the singles courts.”
Bucknell won two of three doubles matches to take the first point, but that's all the momentum the Bison would muster up as the Spider dominated the singles courts.
Newcomer John Karlawish rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at #5 singles, followed by Jacob Dunbar winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) at the top singles spot and Caleb Troy winning in the same fashion at #3.
Brice Polender wrapped up the victory for the Spiders with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #6 singles, while Canyon Teague and James Aronson won their respective matches to round out the scoring.
The Spiders remain in town this weekend, competing in the VCU 4-1 Invitational, taking on Charlotte (9 a.m.) and Morgan State (4 p.m.) on Saturday at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
