RICHMOND, Va. – The gloomy weather outside couldn't slow down the University of Richmond men's tennis team who posted a solid showing during a busy Saturday at the VCU 4-1 Invitational.
Senior Alexandre Felisa led the Spiders with two individual wins to lead Richmond, who split on the day, picking up a decisive 5-0 win over Morgan State, while dropping a tough 4-1 decision to former A-10 foe Charlotte.
“I thought we played with good energy today in two tough matches,” Assistant Coach Jamie Morgan said. “Our seniors set the tone and that's going to be the key for us all year long.”
The Spiders dominated Morgan State in the afternoon with three straight set victories in singles action and a hard-fought three-set win on the doubles court.
Felisa notched his second win of the day, while his classmate Jacob Dunbar won at the top singles spot and junior Caleb Troy dominated at the third single position. Junior James Aronson and newcomer John Karlawish battled their way to a three-set win in the doubles match to complete the Spiders' sweep over the Bears.
Earlier in the day, Felisa logged the Spiders' lone point against Charlotte, winning 6-1, 6-1 over the 49ers' Leonardo Menezes.
Richmond is back on the road next week in a double-header at Lehigh. Match times in Bethelem, Pa. are set for 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
