UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team is enjoying the comforts of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
After a long stretch of matches outside their home state, the Spiders have posted back-to-back wins after dominating in-state rival James Madison in Harrisonburg on Wednesday, 7-0.
“I'm proud and impressed by the entire team's performance today,” Head Coach Ben Johnson said. “Our doubles teams did a great job of setting the tone and we were able to carry that energy into all of our singles matches.”
Sophomore Caleb Troy and junior Jonathan Quenard grabbed momentum for the Spiders early, winning in dominating fashion, 6-0, at the #2 doubles spot. Juniors Jacob Dunbar and Alexandre Felisa followed suit with a 6-1 win at #1 doubles to secure the first point of the match for Richmond.
Dunbar kept things rolling for the Spiders in singles action, winning decisively at the top spot, 6-2, 6-4 over JMU's Sebastian Salinas. Alex Hahn wasn't far behind, winning 6-4, 6-4 at the #6 spot in the lineup to push Richmond's lead to 3-0.
Troy secured the win for Richmond at the fourth doubles spot with a 6-4, 7-5 win over the Dukes' Tristan Stitt.
Felisa, James Aronson and Canyon Teague followed with hard-fought singles victory to complete the sweep for the Spiders.
“It wasn't easy conditions with strong winds, but I thought collectively, we played the conditions very well,” Teague said. “We had to battle through some ugly tennis at times, but we did what we needed to do to win. We fought hard today and we'll continue to bring that same intensity as we move throughout the rest of the season.”
Richmond returns to the courts on Thursday to take on another in-state rival, Longwood, at Westhampton Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
