Richmond fell in its first out-of-state competition Friday, dropping a 4-0 decision to UNC Wilmington to start the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Invitational. The opening day start times were delayed because of thunderstorms in the area.
Richmond is now 2-3 on the year, while the Seahawks are 4-3.
The Seahawks got their first goal near the end of the first half against freshman keeper Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald, Georgia), who faced 10 shots in the opening period, making four saves.
The Seahawks produced three second-half goals to break open the game. UNCW outshot the Spiders 17-5 in the contest.
"We were simply outplayed tonight, from beginning to end," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "UNCW was a very tough opponent."
Senior co-captain forward Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia) led the Spiders with three shots.
Stanfill took the loss, the first of her career, despite making four saves. She is 1-1 on the season.
The shutout win went to Carolyn Huddy, who made one save and is now 4-3 on the year.
The Spiders will face 6-1 St. John's Sunday at noon to finish the Invitational.
