Richmond Upended Late By League-Leading GW Sunday
10/18/2015 | Women's Soccer
Richmond women's soccer played a tight game with league-leading George Washington, but a goal on a free kick from freshman Sofia Pavon was the difference in a 1-0 GW win at Robins Stadium Sunday.
The goal came with one second remaining in the 80th minute, at 79:59.
The win keeps GW atop the league table at 11-4, 6-0 in the A-10. Richmond is now 4-9-1 overall, 2-3-1 in A-10 games.
The game was a back-and-forth game of possession, with the two teams picking their space to find attacking room. Each team managed five shots each in the first half, while the second half played a little more open, with GW getting eight shots to Richmond's six in the final 45 minutes.
I was extremely proud of our team today,” said UR head coach Peter Albright. “We played and our opponents played very smart in possession. I thought we created a number of good chances and played as well as we could possibly play. This was going to be a game of fewer chances and it was a lot of fun for coaches and players competing, playing thoughtful, tactical soccer.”
The keepers were put into pressure a few times. GW keeper Miranda Horn made three saves, while Richmond freshman Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald , Georgia) set the team season high with seven saves in the contest.
Sophomore Lexi Prillaman (Magnolia, Delaware) led the Spiders with five shots taken and two shots on goal. Pavon led the Colonials with five shots.
Richmond will play Thursday at La Salle at 7 p.m. The Spiders will return home Sunday at 1 p.m. against Fordham.
