Spiders Fall In Midweek Tilt At William & Mary 4-1
09/11/2014 | Women's Soccer
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Richmond got a second-half goal from Samantha Cicconi (Madison, New Jersey), but William & Mary capitalized on UR mistakes in the 4-1 victory at Albert-Daly Field Wednesday night in women's soccer, featured nationally at NSCAA.com. Richmond slips to 3-3 on the season, while the Tribe improved to 3-1-1.
The Tribe scored quickly with a goal in the ninth minute with shot that hit the post and came back for a touch pass to Aly Shaughnessy. The Spiders took relative control of the half for the next 25 or so minutes, getting the majority of their seven first-half shots, forcing three saves for the Tribe goalkeeper.
The Tribe was able put together a last-minute goal off a steal, with Samantha Cordum scoring in the 44th minute, just before halftime.

“Ironically, I thought we played well in attack and with good possession, but I thought we were our own worst enemy,” said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. “We gave away four goals tonight and William & Mary finds ways to beat you even when you have things going your way. We just have to make sure we learn something from this.”
Richmond got on the board first in the second half, scoring in the 64th minute, when Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut) started a corner kick, had it passed back from Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) and lofted it into the box for a header from Samantha Cicconi (Madison, New Jersey) for her first goal of the season and second of her career. Colligan's assist was her team-leading fourth of the season.
Just as the Spiders looked to take the momentum and turn the tide, a couple of turnovers in their own end led to goals to put the match away. Shaughnessy and Cordrum scored second goals in the half to finish with two each.
The loss went to goalkeeper Emily Kelly (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands), who is now 3-2 this season.
The Spiders will play next against Tennessee in the Virginia Nike Classic, in Charlottesville. Kickoff is set for noon.
