UT Outlasts Richmond In Physical Match, 3-1
09/14/2014 | Women's Soccer
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- An equalizing goal from Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) in the 35th minute looked to change momentum, but the Tennessee Lady Vols made the proper halftime adjustments and came away with the 3-1 victory, contested at Virginia's Klockner Stadium as part of the Virginia Nike Classic Sunday afternoon. Tennessee is now 4-3, dropping the Spiders to 3-4 on the year.
“We really played some great soccer today,” said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. “I know that you are what your record is, but we created more quality chances today. They have some lethal finishers at the top of their team, and I think that was probably the difference today. We just didn't take advantage of our chances as well as they did.”
UT got the game-opening goal in the seventh minute when Anna McClung got loose in the back and hit a ball to the far post for the goal.

Richmond once again controlled possession, but could not take full advantage of its shot opportunities. The Spiders had seven shots to UT's two in the first half, with the ball in UR possession for the majority of the period.
Freshman Lindsey Williams (Williamsburg, Virginia / Warhill HS) fought off a Tennessee midfielder for possession, setting up the pass to Riefner, who worked her way to the top of the box and rocketed a shot in just under the crossbar to tie the score at one, which held to the half.
“Riefner works so hard and probably could have eight goals so far this season and that was an EPL-quality highlight goal,” said Albright of the scoring play.
In the second half, Tennessee put more pressure on the Spiders, which was more a factor in the result. McClung fired in a shot from the top of the 18 in the 52nd minute, with Aaran Parry scoring off a cross in the 78th minute for the final scoring play of the match.
“We played a tough team today and this will give us good confidence as we move forward and head into conference play,” added Albright. “It bears noting that (defender) Dana Bernetich and the defense gave such a high quality of effort. Tennessee's best players were frustrated with our back line.”
The Spiders led in shots 12-8 for the match and in corner kicks 4-3.
Goalkeeper Emily Kelly (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) was credited with one save, an astounding full-extension dive to her left to stop a shot from New Zealand national player Hannah Wilkinson. Kelly took the loss, falling to 3-3 on the season.
NOTES: Riefner's goal was her second of the season… With three assists, she is second on the team with seven points… Emily Drummond led the team with two shots on goal, including a near-header to tie the game at two in midway through the second half… The game was the lone neutral-site tilt scheduled for Richmond this season.
